Domain FAQs

What is a domain name?
Domain names are the bit of your website address that comes after the www.
e.g. our website address is www.web-feet.co.uk, but our domain name is web-feet.co.uk.

Why do I need a domain name?
You need a domain name so that people can find your website on the internet.
For example, you can have a house, but if you don’t have an address, no one will be able to find it (unless they are good at map reading!).
Domain names are also used in e-mail addresses, for example, support@web-feet.co.uk

Why do I have to pay for a domain name?
You pay to register the domain with a registration agent, so that you have the right to use that specific domain name for a specified period of time.  You can register a domain name for as many years as you want.

Who owns my domain name?
No-one ‘owns’ domain names, they are ‘leased’ for a period of time.  If you let your renewal lapse, you will lose the right to use the domain and it will become available for someone else to register and use.

How often will I have to renew my domain name?
For domains ending in .uk the renewal is every two years and for domains ending in .com/.net etc. the renewal is every year.

How much will it cost to renew my domains through web-feet.co.uk?
Domains ending in .uk cost £30+VAT every two years.
Domains ending in .com, .net etc. cost £50+VAT every year.

Why should I transfer my domain to you?
We can administer any changes to the domain for you, for example, updating the DNS (necessary to point your domain to your hosting).
We will also make sure that your domain is renewed for you.
We will also offer support for any domain related problems.

What information do web-feet.co.uk need to transfer my domain?
We will need to know who you bought your domain from.  Was it a registration agent or did someone buy it for you?
If it was a registration agent and they have a customer account section, we would need your customer login details to access the domain.
If it was a third party, we will provide you with the information you need to give them to get the domain transferred.

Why do I have to pay to transfer a .com, .net etc. domain?
When a .com, .net etc. domain is transferred, it is automatically renewed for another year.

Will my existing site/emails stop working if I transfer a domain to web-feet?
That depends on your existing provider, most will allow you to transfer your domain away and leave your services running until you tell them to stop.  However. some will cancel all your services as soon as you transfer your domain, so you need to make sure that you check with them before you tell us to go ahead and transfer the domain.
